Difficult for children. Easy for adults
Importance of child resistant packaging
Studies reveal that medicines are a leading cause of non-fatal poisoning incidents in numerous countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF report that poisoning is common among children aged 1 to 5 years, as they are curious and explore their environment using all their senses. Most unintentional poisoning cases occur in living rooms and during afternoons. Consequently, specially designed child resistant packaging is crucial for preventing these incidents.
How child resistant packaging works
Child resistant packaging, also known as child proof packaging, is designed to be difficult for children to open while remaining accessible for adults. Key features include:
- Unique locking mechanisms: These require a specific sequence of actions to open, which children are unlikely to perform correctly.
- Durable materials: Packaging is made from robust materials that withstand tampering.
- Safety tests: Products undergo rigorous testing to meet safety standards, ensuring they are child proof but user-friendly for adults.
This type of packaging is used for products that could be harmful to children if ingested, such as medicines, chemicals, and household products.
Innovative child resistant packaging
Creating packaging that is simple, cost-effective, and easy to produce, while being child resistant, is a significant challenge. Ecobliss began developing Locked4Kids cartons in 2013 to meet this challenge, ensuring ease of use for adults but secure closure for children.
Features of Locked4Kids
Locked4Kids consists of a carton and plastic tray that holds the product in blister strips. Key features include:
- Drawer mechanism: To access the product, the tray must be pulled out like a drawer.
- Dual hook system: The drawer can only be opened if two hooks on top of the carton are pressed simultaneously. These push points are located diagonally across each side of the carton, making it difficult for children to understand and manipulate.
Economic and production benefits
- Cost-effective production: Locked4Kids can be produced on standard cartoning equipment, ensuring high-speed automated production similar to regular (non-child-resistant) packaging.
- Standard equipment compatibility: This innovative child resistant packaging is designed for high-speed automated production on standard pharmaceutical packaging equipment, where blister strips are loaded and then inserted into the packaging.
